The Gaoshan Nationality is mainly distributed in Taiwan region and partly scattered in the mainland. Its population is 0.34 million.

The ancestors of the Gaoshan Nationality were a part of Min Yue, branch of the ancient Bai Yue. In the period of the Three Kingdoms, it was called "Shan Yi", in the Sui Dynasty it was called "Liu Qiu Aborigines", in the Ming Dynasty it was called "Dong Fan" and in the Qing Dynasty, it was called "Fan" or "Tu Fan".

The Gaoshan Nationality has its own language which belongs to south Asian language family. It does not have writing language of its own.

The Gaoshan Nationality mainly goes in for agriculture, planting paddy, upland rice, millet, broomcorn millet, taro, potato etc. Fishing also occupies an important role in the economic life.
