The Bouyei nationality is widely distributed over Guizhou Province and also over Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The population is 2.54 million.

The Bouyeis call themselves "Puyi", "Puzhong", "Burao", "Puman", etc. According to the historical records, they were also known as "Xiangkeliao", "Southwest Aborigines", "Zhongjia", "Yijia", "Manliao", "Liliao", etc. The Buoyeis developed from a branch of the "Baiyue" tribe in ancient China.

The Bouyeis have their own language, belonging to the Chinese-Tibetan language family, which continues to use the Chinese writing.

The Bouyeis are engaged in agricultural cultivation, mainly paddy rice.
