The Dongs are distributed over Guizhou, Hunan provinces and Guangxi Chung Autonomous Region. The population is 2.51 million.

The Dongs call themselves "Gan"; they were generally called "Dongren", "Dongliao" and "Dongmiao" recorded in the historical literature. The Dongs' ancestry came from a branch of "Baiyue" tribe in the ancient time.

The Dongs have their own language belonging to the Chinese-Tibetan language family, which continue to use the Chinese writing.

The Dong nationality mainly goes in for agriculture and is also engaged in forestry at the same time. The main agricultural produce is the round-grained non-glutinous rice. They are good at using the paddy field to breed fish and also good at forestry with the growth of fir wood as its well-known breed.
