The Uygurs are distributed mainly over Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and a very few of them are scattered in Taoyuan, Changde and other counties of Hunan Province. The total population is 7.2 million.

The Uygurs call themselves Uygurs, meaning "unity", "alliance". The Uygurs' ancestry was the Dingling tribe and later Tiele tribe joining in the northern nomadic nationality in the third century BC. They continued to move westward and gradually transited from nomadism to settlement for the cultivation of agriculture.

The Uygurs have their own language and writing belonging to Altaic language family and the writing is alphabetic taking the Arabic alphabet as its basis.

The Uygur nationality is mainly engaged in agricultural production good at cotton planting and horticulture. They are also famous for jade carving, carpet making, tapestry and Ades Silk.
