The Tibetan nationality has a population of 4.6 million. 2.1 million of them live in the Tibet Autonomous Region. There are also Tibetan Communities in other provinces, including Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, and Yunnan.
According to Chinese historical records, the Tibetans first settled along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet. At the beginning of the 7th century, King Songzan Gambo began to rule the whole of Tibet and established the slavery kingdom known as "Bo". From the 10th to 12th century, Tibet fell apart into several independent regimes. The Yuan Dynasty (1279 AD - 1368 AD) founded by the Mongols in the 13th century brought the divided Tibet under the unified rule of the central government.
The Tibetans have their own spoken and written language, which belongs to the Tibetan sub-branch of the Tibetan-Burmese language branch of the Chinese-Tibetan language family.
Animal husbandry is the main occupation in Tibet where there are vast expanses of grassland and rich sources of water. The Tibetan sheep, goat, yak, and Pien cattle are natives of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
